IS YOUR SWIMMING POOL CLIMATE READY FOR 2024?

The importance of air distribution

The new Dutch decree (topic: Hygiene & Safety of Bathing Establishments & Swimming Facilities) sets strict requirements for air quality for the first time. The value for trichloramine in the air may not exceed 0.5 mg/m³. This new legislation is the first time air quality in swimming pools is part of the verifiable regulations. The worst location in the swimming room is the decisive factor for this. This means the quality and uniformity of the air distribution will become much more important.

HOW DO YOU ACHIEVE GOOD AIR QUALITY?
The first step for good air quality is always good water treatment, which results in fewer harmful by-products being released from the water surface. The second step is to remove these by-products using good ventilation with sufficient fresh outside air. The third step is good air distribution. Unfortunately, a continuous sensor for trichloramine has not yet been developed, and so a lab sample is required for this measurement. The pool will be closed if the measured air/water quality is insufficient.

AMOUNT OF WATER VAPOR ACCORDING TO THE VDI
The amount of moisture that evaporates from the pool depends on the pool usage, water temperature and air conditions. With the given design conditions and equal use of the pool, the amount of water vapour to be discharged is therefore always a constant. This quantity can be calculated using the formulas from the VDI 2089 guideline. This calculation guideline (not a standard) has been drawn up by the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure. The nominal design airflow rate is calculated based on a delta x of 5.3 g/kg.

OUTDOOR AIR SHARE THEORY AND PRACTICE
When the outside air is very cold and dry, much less outside air is sufficient. The VDI 2089 errs on the safe side and it is therefore a known fact in the professional literature that these design guidelines lead to larger air conditioning installations than are strictly necessary. In practice therefore, there is often less evaporation from the bath. Partly for this reason, we use the Rosenberg/ASHRAE calculation method for the design of your air treatment.

LESS EVAPORATION IN PRACTICE
Lower evaporation from the pool results in lower air quality throughout the heating season than may be expected according to the VDI design. After all: the lower the outside temperature, the lower the outside air proportion, the lower the air quality. It is good to remember that the evaporation of harmful substances is an independent process that mainly depends on the water treatment and not on the evaporation of the water from pool. Our composite air handling units are also corrosion-free in a swimming pool climate, watertight and equipped with the highest thermal class T1/TB1. How to comply with the new Dutch decree in 2024?

In order to comply with the new environmental law, Rosenberg’s swimming pool solutions are equipped with additional integrated control technology that can be used to adjust the air quality in the winter without breaking control loops. We are happy to assist you with the design of your swimming pool ventilation with a realistic evaporation calculation. We take care of your worries by guaranteeing a well-manageable swimming pool climate. Please contact your account manager or our Knowledge Centre.

IS A EUROVENT ENERGY LABEL A SUFFICIENT?
A composite air handling unit with a 12-year warranty and a Eurovent energy label A is a good start for your swimming pool design. To know for sure what the most suitable version is for your swimming pool project, our new Life Cycle Cost calculation offers a lot of certainty. For example, it is easy to compare up to three different air handling units in terms of energy, maintenance and investment costs with each calculation.
